The Natural Deodorant Talk

The Natural Deodorant Talk

Deodorant! It's integral to the bath and body routine. Deodorant is also an important natural product to incorporate, because its basically a hygiene staple, and is applied to a very sensitive area of the body. No one likes sweaty and smelly under-arms so it better work well! Let's get down to the science of it!

Lets Talk About Sweat

Picture
Be real; no one really likes do discuss their sweat-life. Nonetheless, when we sweat, an amazing process is going on within our bodies. Sweat glands, located beneath the skin, release water (and small amounts of salt and fat)  to keep us cool during exercise, heat or stress. Our bodies contain two main types of sweat glands: eccrine glands and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands lie all over our bodies and release mostly water and about 1% salt. Apocrine glands however, produce a mixture of water, fat proteins and other compounds in areas where hair grows heavily, such as the underarms and scalp. In both cases, the liquid-or sweat released is virtually odorless. (Mayo Clinic, 2014) The odor we smell is coming from bacteria and impurities on the skin reacting and being evaporated along with the sweat. This is why some areas on our bodies smell worse than others. Cool right? Pun definitely intended.

Let's Talk About Classic Antiperspirant Deodorant

Most traditional antiperspirant deodorants contain aluminum based compounds that "plug" sweat ducts under the arm or wherever you apply it, keeping your under-arms dry until you decide to remove it. Great concept. The problem with these deodorants is the aluminum compounds.  Deep beneath the surface of the under arm lie glands such as the lymph nodes which are an integral part to the immune system. The thought is that temporarily plugged sweat ducts allow for bacteria and chemicals to build up inside the body over time. Some studies have shown Aluminum based antiperspirants have been linked to various cancers, and Alzheimer's disease. These studies have, however been debated in the medical world. But “absence of evidence is not evidence of absence,” says Dr. Philip Harvey, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Applied Toxicology. (Time, 2015). Even if more studies are done solely on the dangers of aluminum based chemicals in antiperspirants,  here are still more concerns about the combination of this substance and the safety of other cosmetic chemicals combining within the body.
Those of us in the natural/holistic world would rather avoid these compounds all together, than than gamble with diseases or wait for more studies to be concluded. Natural alternatives mean avoiding some of the risk altogether. There are plenty of companies that create natural, aluminum-free deodorant including Salubria.

Lets Talk About Tackling Sweat in a Different Way

Salubria's deodorant is one with mild antiperspirant properties that really works. I should know, since I developed and have been using it for almost 3 years now. Family, friends and co-workers haven't complained about me yet, so we're in the clear!
Salubria's formula consists of organic coconut oil, organic beeswax, organic arrowroot powder and baking soda. Essential oils, such as tea tree and lime smell great and add additional anti-bacterial power. It's creamy consistency makes it easier to apply. The deodorant absorbs quickly, and sets into a smooth, non-greasy powder that last all day. The coconut, beeswax and essential oils are absorbed by the skin and help to kill bacteria before sweating occurs. It also keeps skin soft and helps remove impurities. Bye razor bumps!  Baking soda and arrowroot powders work in tandem. Baking soda has natural deodorizing properties, while the starches in arrowroot absorb some of the moisture from sweating. Designed to stay put, allow your skin to still "breathe" and kill bacteria/odor even after you sweat. How awesome is that? If you haven't made the switch, do it already. Your body will thank you! You can get yours here.
If you have already made the switch to natural deodorants, what's you opinion on them? Which brands do you like? Chat it up in the comments, would love to hear!
